Carmel is a town located in southeastern Putnam County.  The town of Carmel consists of the hamlets of Carmel, Mahopac and Mahopac Falls.  Carmel has been the county seat since 1812, when Putnam County was formed. Sybil Ludington's statue on Route 52 marks the heroic efforts of this young 16 year old who rode her horse "Star" for over 40 miles on rough night roads to warn of the British invasion of Danbury during the Revolutionary War.

Schools and Educational Facilities

The Carmel School District serves Kent, Patterson and the town of Carmel. Attendance is determined by geographical boundaries. Carmel Central School district consists of Carmel High School, George Fischer Middle School, Kent Elementary, Kent Primary School and Matthew Paterson Elementary School.
